Residential electricity prices by state — July 2026
U.S. homes paid an average of 18.31¢/kWh in July 2026, up 4.9% from a year earlier. The most expensive: Hawaii (48.00¢), California (33.61¢), Maine (32.41¢). The cheapest: Louisiana (12.72¢), Nevada (12.77¢), Utah (13.12¢). The biggest year-over-year increase was in Hawaii (22.0%).
Higher prices make each kWh from solar worth more and shorten the payback. This page updates when the EIA publishes a new month.
